would it be reasonable if someone transfers publisher's copyright-free works to the public domain?

Not all creators have similar objectives for their works. Some desire to share their works as largely as possible, and don not especially care if somebody else alters it or reuses it or even makes money from it. On the other hand, some other creators want to control precisely how their works are used, and even by whom, and do not want other people to make profits off of their works, either at all, or at least without paying the authors their share. Many creators want acknowledgment, always, but some like to work anonymously.
The point is that whatever an author wants is fine, but one should have all the information and consider all the facts before deciding and should make such decisions for themselves.
Nowadays, many creators have to choose between trying to commercialize their work in traditional ways, or trying to take advantage of the exposure, likely without direct reimbursement, though probably with the goal of attaining fame or future compensation.
It cannot be claimed that one choice is better than the other as it all depends on what you, the creator wants, or on the work in question. But every choice can lead to different kinds of copyright administration. So, it is vital to think around your goals for the concerned work, and to ensure that the option you make will achieve the said goals.
