What you are referring to is probably section 313 of the Crpc which is "power to examine the accused".
Under this section, the judge without giving any previous warning may ask the accused questions related to the case. The accused is not taken under oath while answering these questions. This section allows the accused to talk freely in front of the judge and present his case.
