Is it alright to publish certain lines from a song, to be added in an annual report of a society? Will it amount to violation if I don't get necessary permission to publish the lines?
Is it enough if I indicate the name of the song and the lyricist in the report as a footnote?
The theme of the report is people, and the lines are also indicative of people.

No, simply taking out a lines or a passage from some works can not be said to be an infringement of copyright, as it will stop the world intellectual growth. Secondly there is no copyright in a song except in some very exceptional case.

Dear Ashis,
Mr.Assumi is right. There is no copyright in a song as such, because a song is a bundle of things put together. (lyrics, music composition, rendition) Hence what you will be doing is extracting the lyrics/poetry in your report. There is no harm in doing so. You must though put a footnote or mention in the text that the same is an extract and mention the name of the author.
