Can IPC-279 be imposed for traffic signal violation?

While riding motor cycle I violated red signal and was charged by police under IPC-279. In charge sheet they mentioned the incident as rash driving but not signal violation. when enquired about the same the police argued that signal violation also comes underIPC-279 as it endanger others life. if so, why a seperation Sec 177 of M.V.Act? Police also told me that  they  have to charge 20 IPC-279 cases on that day as per order from top.

Can I contest the case in court? How can I prove that the police maliciously charged IPC-279 instead of  M.V.A-177 ? My bike was taken into custody and i was released on bail of two friends, and copies of RC book, insurance, licence also given. Under RTI act, Is it possible to ask  the number of cases registered on that day under IPC-279,MVA-177 etc? If so, can I use that statistics to convince the court? please help.
