Doubt regarding a contract

There is a clause in the service agreement between the employer and the employee which states that if the employee quits his job before the completion of 36 months of employment, the employee will have to pay 3 months' salary to his employer as compensation. Is such a clause legally binding? Please provide case laws or any relevant provisions. Thanks!
