A lawyer is a person learned in the law as a counsel, solicitor or attorney/lawyer. A lawyer is a person who has a license to practice law in various different fields. The system of rules or conduct which is established by the sovereign government is known as Law. These rules of conduct prove helpful in correcting wrongs, maintaining stability within the society, and helps in delivering justice to the victims.

The legal jurisdictions exercise their rights in determining the role of a lawyer. The meaning of the term lawyer differs from place to place.

• In countries like New Zealand and Australia the word “lawyer” refers to both barristers and solicitors. However, it does not include people who do not practice the law.
• In Canada, the term “lawyer” refers to those individuals who have been called to the bar or have qualification as civil law notaries in the province of Quebec. The common lawyers in Canada are also known as “barristers and solicitors”, but are not referred to as an “attorneys”. The term “attorney” has a different meaning in Canadian usage. However, there are civil law advocates who refer to themselves as “attorneys” and sometimes “barrister and solicitor”.
• In England (United Kingdom), the term “lawyer” is often used loosely and it refers to a broad variety of personals trained in law/legal practice. It includes legal practitioners such as barristers, legal executives, licensed conveyancers, and solicitors. It is also refers to those people who are involved with the law but are not practicing it on behalf of clients.
• In India, the term “lawyer” is used in conversation, but the official term is “advocate” as per the Advocates Act, 1961.
• Within Scotland, the term “lawyer” includes advocates and solicitors who are legally trained. It can also include judges and other support-staff working within the law.
• In the USA, the term “lawyer” is used for attorneys who may practice law.

In England  only the Barristers used to argue  the case. The  brief was prepared by Attorneys. The  Barrister will settle the pleadings prepared by Attorneys and receive their settling fee. In India there is no difference as to Solicitors, Attorneys and Advocates. All these matters  are handled  by experts in Law . In Calcutta the old Attorney firms and still in existence. The role of the Attorneys in Supreme Court are replaced by Advocate on record. Only through them we can file  papers  in Supreme Court.
