Dear Sandeep,

Article 15 protects citizens from discrimination by the state on the basis of religion, race, caste, s*x, or place of birth, or any combination of these factors. Articles 15 and 16 are instances of equality guarantees that give effect to Article 14.

The SC/ST Act, also known as the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, protects marginalised communities from discrimination and atrocities.

All of the Act's offences are punishable. Without a warrant, the police can arrest the criminal and begin an investigation into the case without waiting for court permission.

The Act stipulates both minimum and maximum penalties. In most situations, the minimum term is six months in prison, with a maximum of five years in prison and a fine. In other circumstances, the minimum term is increased to one year, while the maximum sentence is increased to life imprisonment or even death.

Regards,

Aryan Raj
