Defamation of libel and slander , do we have sections for both?
Do we have separate act for both in India?

Hello Niranjana Anpazhagan,

Defamation is a false statement presented as a fact that causes injury or damage to the character of the person it is about. Defamation of character happens when something untrue and damaging is presented as a fact to someone else.

Libel is an untrue defamatory statement that is made in writing and Slander is an untrue defamatory statement that is spoken orally both of which are types of Defamation.

Defamatory statement can be made in any medium wherein slander could be in a blog comment or spoken in a speech or said on televisionLibelous acts only occur when a statement is made in writing inclusive digital statements.

In Indian law, both Libel and Slander are criminal offences under Section 499 and 500 of IPC respectively. Under law of torts, slander is actionable and libel is actionable per se.

I hope this helps.
