FIR is the first information report it is the basic report that is registered once the complaint is received. Chargesheet is filed after FIR and after police investigation. This is post investigation findings along with the witness statements and affidavits. The chargesheet names the persons against which the charge is submitted this may include additional persons that were charged in FIR or there may be some less. The case starts after chargesheet filing as the court issues summons to appear to accused after chargesheet is filed.

Sanjeev,

can chargesheet can be made based on FIR? I mean to ask, what level of investigation. Does this need documentary proof to submit chargesheet. What in case of false FIR?

FIR set the criminal machinery into motion, folows by police investigations culminating in charge sheet giving grounds or the reasons to put up the accused for trial.

FIR is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence

A Chargesheet is a formal document of accusation prepared by a law-enforcement agency in India. It is distinct from the First Information Report (FIR) (which is the core document that describes a crime that has been committed), usually refers to one or more FIRs, and charges an individual or organization for (some or all of) the crimes specified in those FIR(s). [1][unreliable source] [2] [3]

Once the chargesheet has been submitted to a court of law, the court decides as to who among the accused has sufficient prima facie evidence against him to be put on trial. After the court pronounces its order on framing of charges, prosecution proceedings against the accused begin in the judicial system

Chargesheet - detailed investigated report stating the persons involved in such an offence and what is the motive for tha offence
