Hours after Headlines Today broke the story that National Commission for Women allegedly stopped the investigation into the Aarushi Talwar double murder case, it tried to find answers to some pertinent questions - Did commission chairperson Girija Vyas try to scuttle the probe? Or why were repeated calls made to the NCW members, who had started the investigation and found some evidence.

When Headlines Today confronted Vyas, she parried the allegations as baseless, saying she is "committed to her work and women's cause".

"Why will I order committee members to stop the probe," she said. However, earlier Vyas had admitted that she did make phone calls to her members but insisted that this should not have forced them to stop the probe.

Former NCW member Nirmala Venkatesh, who exposed Vyas' role in allegedly scuttling the women's body's probe into Aarushi and Hemraj's murders, said even as she along with Sweety Sood, another NCW member, protested why they should come back from the site as ordered by Vyas 'five times over phone', the NCW chief remained unfazed.

While Poornima Advani, former chairperson NCW, said Vyas needs to do some explaining why she made those calls, Editor-Investigation Harinder Baweja  was curt: "she, in fact, shut the case".

While the experts believed that there further probe needs to be done into the NCW chief's role, there was a common refrain: Political influence in NCW probes must end. The experts were also of the view that the commission must have qualified and legally knowledgeable people.
