Temple loud speaker nuisance

To whom it may concern,

The priest at Bhavanishankar Temple in TKTG Layout, Ittamadu, BSK 3rd Stg., plays loud music on a daily basis and the ELECTRIC BELL that is used is really a huge nuisance (playing half-hour on a daily basis in the morning). The temple is resided in the core of a residential area, and the residents have begged/requested/instructed the priest to keep the volumes down, which is to be 55 dB in a residential area, according to the Air Pollution Control Act, but since the owner of the temple is a politically well-connected person, the priest is taking advantage of the same and doesn't care a damn for the residents' requests. Every once in a while, there will be some kind of a function and on those days, loud music on orchestra-sized speakers is played nonstop from 5 am to 10 pm.

We have complained multiple times to the owner of the temple as well, but to no avail. Despite having our own place, we have reached a point that we are thinking of changing our place of residence, and that is really a humiliating thing. Day in-day out, we are living in the fear of when the bell is going to be switched on, when is the music going to end, what function holds next, etc.

Neighbors and family members are afraid to officially lodge a police complaint for the fear of owner, who is politically well-connected, and to what extent he can go to protect his property.

Kindly advise if there is a way to complain against the erring without having to disclose one's identity.

Thanking you,

A Humiliated Citizen

You could try lodging an anonymous complaint but whether it will yield  any results is doubtful. Frankly, if you are afraid it may be better to change residence since life only favors the brave. Sorry if  that sems harsh but it has been"survival of the fittest" always, whatever else may anyone pretend.

You may bring the matters to the notice of the SDM or the District Collector. You also have the option of filing a Writ Petition in the High Court.

Supreme Court has issued sweeping direction to control the noise generated from fire crackers, loudspeakers, vehicular noise, etc. Court also stressed the need for education in this regard. So have to convince temple management with humble request & politely.

Having had to stay at different parts of the country, having shifted around 50 rooms, let me record that the locality talked off is better than vicinities of butcher's shop, wine shop, for that matter any shop etc.

Some points that are being missed:

1. Children get to learn to be devout. That devotion turns in good to the parents later on & they get the true fruits of their labor.

2. One gets to learn Indian aspects that have great value even today in foreign countries (Tabla, Mridangam, Vocal, Bhajans, Slokas etc etc). Some of the skills do not get Gurus so easily & visiting Gurus come from outside. They have special needs & the classes itself get scheduled at odd hours.

3. The Bhajans, sholokas, bell, musical instruments etc create vibarations that have positive effect on the mind; that which discos, wine etc does not.

4. The temples are not as unfair. The bhaktas get prasad & that token divine gift is so gratifying.

5. Several highly successful people start & end their day at temples as they have seen that their success keeps increasing with the brief meditations, chantings etc.

You/your people have done some punya to have got into that location. But you may always throw the gift, for it has come free you see.

Thank you, sir.  I shall explore these options.

Thanks again for your counsel.

Thank you, Hardeep.  I do agree that fortune favors the brave, and shall take your suggestion into serious consideration to come out in the open.

Dear Suresh,

Thank you for your kind words.  Drawing comparison between living in the vicinity of a temple and that of wine shop, butcher shop, etc., is not the apt thing here as I am talking about a proper residential area.

#1.  For children, I really don't think missing homework or being unable to open a book because the temple is playing loud music ALL DAY LONG will help any kid in anyway.

#2.  Listening to Tabla, Mridangam, Vocal, Bhajans, Slokas etc etc, does not necessarily mean you learn to play them.  If I want my kids to learn those instruments, I shall surely find a Guru for same; but definitely not at the cost of someone else's peace of mind and without their willingness.

#3.  I really do not know about the positive effect of vibrations, but can be sure of a migraine at the end of the day :)

#4.  I have absolutely nothing against the temples, can't they give the Prasad without playing loud music?

#5.  Its good to have meditations and chantings as a part of one's life, but thats got nothing to do with playing loud music and disturbing others.  I mean, isn't meditation supposed to be in a silent environment?

As far as punya is concerned, you tell me what God will bless you when you're torturing people around playing loud music for hours together, disturbing others' peace of mind in the name of God, forcing others to quit their homes because they are tired of telling you that its a nuisance?????

Temples do good & need sustain. Temples are not getting funds the way even individuals earn & nothing is working even for them without money. This temple does seem to have office bearers. A citizen's meeting could discuss the issues in the full knowledge of all concerned. Things will settle in due course of time.

A step ahead, one could be more broad minded. One/group could think of gifting a stereo speaker; a full sound system if possible. Then on, a small training to the temple person/s on the various controls, etiquettes will solve the issue.

The saying goes, "Dharmaha rakshathi raksh*thaha". God may not be drawn into controversies & humiliated. Temples are facing various constraints. Be a part of the solution to the institutions & not think of burdening them.

Explore the avenues above (Meet the person/s, Gift a stereo speaker, a Full sound system if possible, Train the person/s). That will in itself cause the rapproachment. Do not draw God into controversies & humiliate.
