Lawyer turns out to be a murder convict

TIMES NEWS NETWORK 2/6/10

Pune: A lawyer practising in the district and sessions court here turned out to be a murder convict and was arrested by the crime branch on May 27.
Madhukar Nana Khade (50) of Dhankawdi was arrested by the anti-extortion cell of the crime branch, Pune, nine years after he was released from jail on parole. During this period he had changed his name to Bhaskar Ramrao Patil and had started practising law.
Khade was serving a life term for the murder of Vitthal Khade and had been arrested by the Pusegaon police in Satara in 1990. A year later, he was sentenced to life by the district and sessions court in Satara. He was taken to Yerawada central jail to serve his sentence and while there, studied
law. In 1993, Khade was released on bail by the Bombay high court, after which, he obtained a licence to practise law from the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
The HC upheld Khade’s sentence in 1999, but when he failed to surrender, he was arrested by the Satara police and sent to jail in 2001.
Later in the August of the same year, he was released on parole, but did not return to jail after the period lapsed.
His appeal challenging the HC order is still to be heard by the Supreme Court.
According to inspector Kishore Jadhav, who led the team that made the arrest, Khade was sent back to jail after an inquiry conducted at Pune, Satara and Akluj revealed that Khade and Bhaskar Patil were indeed the same person.
