College charges extra for payment of fees through debit card

Can colleges charge extra money for payment of fees through debit card? My cousin's college is demanding an additional 2000 rupees for payment of his fees through debit card? Is this legal and ethical?

If you wanted any action against the erring college, then file a consumer case in the District consumer forum.

whether student comes under consumer or not is under consideration before larger bench of National Commission. Meanwhile you can complain to the Education Dept authority of your state against the college management.

Mr. Suri.Sravan Kumar, kindly see that the querist's problem is not related to a student who was asked to shell out excess fee than prescribed by the College Management or the Education department, but he has paid through debit card and the college has charged Rs. 2000/- in excess towards the processing fee. Please advise.

Thomas V Johnson; the querist please note, according to the guidelines of RBI, no extra charge for using debit/credit card can be levied, hence you can approach District Consumer Forum against the college. The college has also committed another crime in accepting your debit card from your cousin, though you are not the beneficiary.
