CBDT WANTS JAIL TERM FOR TAX EVADERS

May I put some corrections here. The maximum Jail term provided for evasion of tax u/s 276C is Seven Years with fine. Yes, generally IT Authorities are reluctant in launching prosecution due to lethargic justice delivery system in lower courts. The prosecution is launched mostly in cases where penalty has been confirmed atleast at first appellate stage. To reach such level, generally so much time is elapsed that the case loses sight of the incumbant officer. Further the compounding provisions dilute the rigours of prosecution. There have been few cases of final imprisonment in the tax evasion matters. However, more rigorous provisions and speedy trials are always welcome.
