I want to buy agriculture land from my father in law ? It is a self acquired land. Can I request him to make a gift deed in the name of his daughter who is my wife and then tell my wife to gift the same to me ? which will help me save on the registration and stamp duty charges . Is this the right way from the revenue and tax point of view ?

The Father-daughter, Husband-wife relation might be in the list for exemption/rebate from duty/charges.
Inquire the charges from local Sub Regsitrar's office.
Otherwise gift deed is the option.
