yes he can.
Undoubtedly, the right to defend in a trial is a
very valuable right of an accused. The right of the accused to be defended by a
lawyer of his choice is not only guaranteed under Article 22 (1) of the
Constitution but such right is also the mandate of Section 303 of the Code of
Criminal Procedure.
Law of Evidence
Sec.137..Cross-examination.The examination of a witness by the adverse party shall be called his cross-examination.

jee haan bilkul.abhiyukt ko apni jirah karne ki poori aajadi hai!
evidence act constitutional remedy se upar nahi hai.
Mr.Ajitabh has told very clearly about article-22(1)
abhiyukt koi bhi adalti karywahi jo procedure main ho kar sakta hai .
final bahas bhi.
wo chahe apne saath advocate ko khada karke bhi apni karywahi kar sakta hai.

An accused can conduct all the proceedings in a case himself without engaging a lawyer and if engaged one even then he himself may conduct the proceedings in presence of his counsel.
