No. They cannot take up any other profession or business.

Professional Ethics of Advocates does not allow to do both, do business along with the Advocates Practice.

Yes, you can be a share holder in a Private ltd. company or a public ltd. company. Famous Lawyer Nani Palkiwala had invested in many companies and sometimes had been Director in many companies.

They can be investor partner (sleeping partner) in a business.

Refer the Advocates Rules---- An Advocate who is involved in any business or appointed as Director of a company is Not entitled to practice in Courts. He should submit a letter to his State Bar Council to suspend his practice as long as he is in business.

The Advocates Act and Bar Council of India Rules provide that an advocate is not prohibited from becoming a director in a company but he should not perform any executive function of the company. Thus, an advocate can be a Non-Executive or Independent Director of the company but cannot be Executive Director of the company. An advocate is free to draw the sitting fees provided to independent directors for his directorship in the company
