Can a bank close an account of a customer without prior information? Give any recent judgement in this regard.

no they cannt do and they never do they always send notice informing u the reason for closure of account.
it may b possible than u may not b available on regd address so u may not have receieved notice

it is not closed without prior intimation to the account holder .

If the account is not operated for a long time, the bankers put the account as non-operative account. It could be revived by a letter and a token deposit or transaction in the account.

If the bank otherwise close the account, it amounts to bankers negligence and it can be sued under defective service of consumer legislation as well as complaint to Banking Ambudsman.

Any way the query appears to be academic in nature without mentioning the reasons for the closure.

Bank cannot close account without intimating the customer. You can approach consumer forum or Banking Ombudsman for remedy

Your question is incomplete as it lacks information about the reason on account of which the account was closed. If any account has been opened to accommodate illegal transactions, like Hawala, or funds transferred from or to sources involved in illegal or anti-national activities, bank can't take responsibility for such illegal transactions and have to close the account.
