difference betwen a lawyer and an advocate

what was the difference between a lawyer and an advocate.......?

does both are same or having differences..?

Lawyer is one who knows law,advocate is a lawyer who practises law.

An advocate is one who speaks on behalf of another person.According to sec.2(a) of The Advocates Act 1961 'advocates'means an advocate entered in any roll under the provisions of this Act.

A lawyer is a person,in Britain esp.a Solicitor,who has been trained in the law,whose profession is to give legal advice and assistance to clients and represent them in court or in other legal matters.(Longman Dictionary).The main difference is that the term'lawyer'is used in a general sense.According to sec.30 of the Advocates Act,1961 Every advocate or lawyer whose name is entered in the State roll shall be entitled to practice in India.

In India, there is a great difference between a lawyer and a n advocate.
an advoate is a person enrolled with the Bar and entitled to plead in courts but a lawyer is a law gradute who is not enrolled with the Bar hence can not plead.

Dear E. Prakash,
Don't be confused about difference between a Lawyer and an Advocate. Both are same. both are law graduate, both can plead before the court, both are law graduate and have to enrolled on the roll of the state bar council.
