Dear Querist
A First Information Report (FIR) is a written document prepared by police organizations in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Japan when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. It is generally a complaint lodged with the police by the victim of a cognizable offense or by someone on his on her behalf, but anyone can make such a report either orally or in writing to the police.
An FIR is an important document because it sets the process of criminal justice in motion. It is only after the FIR is registered in the police station that the police take up investigation of the case. Anyone who knows about the commission of a cognizable offence, including police officers, can file an FIR.

General Diary is an important document in Indian Police station, which is used to record every major incident (e.g. theft, murder, traffic accidents) happening within the jurisdiction of the police station on a daily basis. The General Diary is likely to be maintained by a veteran Head Constable (equivalent to a Sergeant) known as G.D Charge Head Constable.

While an FIR is the contents in writing recorded by police of the incidence of crime reported to it ;
a G D is a dairy in which each and every working of the police with reference to a reported crime is recorded.One can call it a Journal Book of entries.

Though the exeperts have rightly opined, I believe the query is an academic one.
Raj Kumar Makkad (Expert) 14 March 2013
I do agree with Barman that the query is just an academic, however, experts have provided very good information.
