(Querist) 23 July 2009 This query is : Resolved
Hello Sirs / MS,

I am doing research in computer science. I want to make a system which 'll indian judicial department to take quick decisions. For this I am planning to develop an algorithm which can help/lawyers to find similar judgements.I am aware that currently manupatra , westlaw etc, are in use, and I am worrking to improve their algorithm.
As I am not from legal domain, I want to know few very basic question from the people belonging to legal domain.

1 :-- How lawyers search for a judgement in legal search engine ?
2 :-- Do you think any area of improvement over there ?
3:-- What is the importance of citation in the judgement ?
4:-- how can I say whether two judgements are similar or not ?

Looking for quick resposes.
Thanks in advance

In my view:-
1. We search judgment on the following Basis:- A) Statues ( as in under what section the judgment have been passed), B) sections, C) Orders ( as in what is the order passed), D) case facts, E)particular period, F)Court Jurisdictions, G)Name of the Parties, H) Citation etc.

2. yup for sure. you can improve the same a lot.

3. It is important as the lower courts are bound by the judgment given by the higher courts in particular the High court of the state where the lower court is located and the Supreme court.

4. If the facts of the case and the Law which is there in question is same then both the judgments are same.

There are many possibilities and chances for improvement.
