About The Institute :

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) was established under the WBNUJS Act 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999). It is a university within the meaning of subsection (f) of Section 2 and approved under Section 12 B for receiving grants under the UGC Act 1956. It has been granted permanent affiliation of the Bar Council of India. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of NUJS and is also the Chairman of its highest governing body, the General Council. NUJS strives to pursue holistic legal education in order to prepare its graduates for the diverse worlds of litigation, corporate legal practices, academia and legal research. Due emphasis is given to clinical legal education in order to equip the students with knowledge, skill and values to promote the ends of justice through the instrument of law. NUJS offers five-year integrated B.A. / B.Sc. LL.B (Hons.) and two-year LL.M programmes besides M.Phil, Ph.D and LL.D programmes in law. It follows semester system and its students are exposed to a carefully articulated blend of law and social science courses. It adopts Socratic Method of teaching of well-structured and regularly updated curricula with a host of optional courses to cater to the needs of appropriate specialization. In addition to writing end-semester examinations, each student has to compulsorily prepare project papers on select topics pertaining to each subject of study. A very rigorous system of evaluation is in place. Grading is done on an eight-point scale. NUJS has an excellent faculty, a good balance of the experienced and the young. They work with the self-belief that NUJS is poised to become the premier law school in this part of the globe and their pupil are among the best in the world of legal education. To augment their efforts, NUJS has entered into memorandum of agreements with a number of premier institutions of international repute to gain academic inputs of outstanding teachers as guest faculty on a sustainable basis. The University is located on a prime land at the Salt Lake City of Kolkata, overseeing the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The campus has an academic and three residential blocks, two seven storied halls of residence for women and men each and a two-storied staff accommodation cum Guest House. The academic block, named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, is a four-storied majestic edifice in stone, having 105 rooms in all. It is an inward looking building, octagonal in shape, and rounded by widespread verandas that open up to a vast central lush green courtyard. image It has everything a modern university ought to have - a host of class rooms, seminar halls, conference rooms, a well-stocked air-conditioned library open from 8 A.M. through 10 P.M. with services of internet, printing and photocopying. Physical infrastructure of NUJS also includes on campus Bank, a canteen, state-of-the-art kitchens at the hostels, health care and sports and recreational facilities. Students of NUJS have adapted themselves to computer aided education in a big way and LAN service is extended to most of the rooms in the hostels. Construction of a modern auditorium and complete networking of the entire campus is now underway. Students of NUJS are a promising lot and are carefully nurtured for all round excellence. They have enviable track-records in the field of mooting and debating, have regular publications in peer-reviewed journals of international repute and are known for their outreach community services and legal aid activities. They have the unique distinction of publishing regularly two journals, one quarterly and other annual, featuring contemporary legal thought. Course Details :

Eligibility criteria - Through CLAT ( Common Law Admission Test). The admission shall be based exclusively on the performance in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). However, to qualify for admission, the candidate 1. must have passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) or an examination equivalent thereof, securing in aggregate not less than 50% in all the core subjects and English put together. 2. must not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st July, 2008. In the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category, the age limit will be 22 years as on 1st July, 2008, All those who have appeared in the qualifying examinations are entitled to write the Admission Test. But any candidate securing less than 50% in the qualifying examination will be denied admission notwithstanding his/her rank in the Admission Test No. of Seats :- Total : 125 General : 78 Scheduled Caste : 15 Scheduled Tribe : 08 Physically Challenged : 02 Foreign Nationals : 04 Sponsored by Non-Resident Indians : 18 In Case of non-availability of students of reserved category, the seats are treated as unreserved as per rule. Candidates Sponsored by Non-Resident Indians, have to take Common Law Admission Test as well. Foreign students will be admitted directly on the basis of their performance in the qualifying examination, overall academic record and command over English language.
