Government of India has appointed Justice Vangala Eswaraiah, former Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes. Justice Eswaraiah has assumed charge of the post of Chairperson, National Commission for Backward Classes on 19th September, 2013.

 

The National Commission for Backward Classes has been set up under the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993, pursuant to the direction of the Supreme Court in the Mandal case judgement for setting up a national body for Backward Classes at the Centre as a permanent body. The Commission’s last Chairperson was Justice M. N. Rao, a retired Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

 

Justice V. Eswaraiah hails from Nemillakalva village, Valigonda Mandal, Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Science from City Science College at Hyderabad and a Law Degree from Law College of Osmania University.

 

Justice V. Eswaraiah practised as a lawyer mainly in the High Court and Civil Courts in Hyderabad. He handled several important and sensitive Civil, Criminal and Constitutional matters. He worked as a Government Pleader for 5 years from January, 1990 to December, 1994 and was the Standing Counsel of A.P.D.D.C.L. and Nalgonda District Co-op. Central Bank, etc.

 

Justice V. Eswaraiah was appointed as Additional Judge, High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 17-5-1999 and as Judge w.e.f. 20-4-2000. He was the Executive Chairman of the A.P. State Legal Services Authority from 6-4-2012 to 9-3-2013. He performed the duties of the Office of the Chief Justice, High Court of Andhra Pradesh in 2012. He was appointed to perform the duties of the Office of the Chief Justice, High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad and retired as such on attaining the age of superannuation on the afternoon of 9-3-2013.
