Permission of the Central Government for the prosecution of a Member of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) was conveyed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 29.12.2011 and the approval of the Central Government under section 6A of Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 for registering a Preliminary Enquiry in respect of some Members of ITAT, has been conveyed to CBI on 29.3.2012. Giving this information in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister of Law & Justice, said that during investigations CBI had seized computer hard disk of a lawyers firm. Investigations led to the retrieval of certain documents showing similarities with certain orders passed by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), the Minister said.

 

Shri Salman Khurshid further informed the House that the President, ITAT, has been advised to be vigilant and review the rule and practices relating to preparation and delivery of the orders of the Tribunal to strengthen the systems.
