UP Police to ban internet sites encouraging suicides Lucknow, Apr 21 Uttar Pradesh police, concerned over the increasing incidents of suicides in the state in the recent past, was considering to ban some internet sites giving information on suicides. ''I have asked the concerned police officials, who look after the cyber crime, to start the process to restrict assess of such internet sites that encourage suicides,'' said state Director General of Police (DGP) Vikram Singh here today. Addressing a seminar on the subject of 'Suicides-Reason and Remedy' organised by UP Police department, Mr Singh said Television and Internet are one of the reasons for rise of suicides by the youth of the country. ''There should be a blanket-ban on such sites, which are giving details about how to commit suicide or any other information over the issue,'' he said. The DGP also said that several internet sites, related to suicides, have already been banned by the Britain government after their was a steep rise in suicides there. Mr Singh, however, expressed concern over the rise of suicides particularly among the students in UP. This month in Lucknow, 20 cases of suicides, mostly of the students were reported, while in the state an average of 3,500 suicides cases were registered every year. Most of the suicides by students took place between February and April, as it is the time for preparation of the examinations, claimed the DGP. Blaming the change in attitude of the parents towards their children, end of the joint-family concept, depression among the working class community and mental stress on the students for the rise of suicides, the DGP maintained that only effective counselling and spritual involvement could bring out the people from taking such extreme step.
