Striking Lawyers Boycott Government Talks In Chennai Dated : 24 Feb 2009, 1240 hrs IST, Source : Times Now CHENNAI: Text: There seems to be no relief in sight to the standoff between the striking lawyers and the Tamil Nadu government, as defiant lawyers refused to turn up for a first round of meetings scheduled with the government. Tamil Nadu’s law minister had called for two rounds of meeting with the striking lawyers with the DGP, and the public prosecutor representing the government. A group of around 300 lawyers on Monday went on a day-long fast in front of the Madras High Court, a day after their associations decided to indefinitely boycott courts to press their demands, including action against police officials for the February 19 lathicharge by the police in the court’s premises. Earlier, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi had even threatened to go on hunger strike if the police-lawyers impasse did not end. Karunanidhi said, "I will fast on my hospital bed if lawyers do not stop agitation. Police and lawyers must not join hands with my detractors."
