Controversial RJD Lok Sabha Member Mohammed Shahabuddin has suffered a fresh setback on Friday with a special court in Siwan sentencing him to rigorous imprisonment for a year for threatening a government official. Additional District and Sessions Judge B B Gupta found the MP guilty of threatening the then sub-inspector of Jiradei police station Harendra Rai in 2005 over mobile phone from Beur jail. The court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for a year under section 506 of the IPC. Rai, who was the investigating officer in several criminal cases against the MP, was threatened and warned that he should not go ahead with the probe on 2nd February, 2005. This was the fifth case in which the MP was convicted out of the eight cases in which the trial has concluded. In three other cases, Shahabuddin was exonerated of the charges in absence of sufficient evidence. A special court had on 8th May, 2007 convicted Shahabuddin and sentenced him to life imprisonment for kidnapping and killing of CPI-ML activist Chotelal Gupta. Special court judge G P Srivastava had in September 2007 sentenced Shahabuddin to rigorous imprisonment for ten years for attacking the SP of Siwan S K Singhal during assembly elections in 2000. He had been sentenced to two years imprisonment in a case relating to kidnapping of a CPI-ML activist Keshav Baith, besides three years in a stolen vehicle case. Trial is in progress in 27 other criminal cases against the RJD MP.
