9th September, 2014, was a day when new avenues were opened and new relations built as Symbiosis Law School, Pune welcomed students and Faculty from the Land of the Rising Sun, with the Japanese delegation led by Prof. Stephen Hesse from Chuo University being welcomed by the Symbiosis Law School family of faculty, staff and students. The delegation shall stay in Pune from 9th to 12th September.

The session was inaugurated with the welcome address, delivered by Dr. ShashikalaGurpur, Director, SLS, Pune, who delved upon various facets of Law and legal learning scenario in India and in SLS, Pune. She also highlighted the culture, diversity and the rich heritage which India and Pune as a city had to offer.  In brief yet gracious words, she expressed her gratitude towards the Faculty and students of Chuo University for honouring the institute with their presence and welcomed them, hoping that their stay would turn out to be fruitful and worthwhile.

The Faculty of Chuo University, Prof. Stephen Hesse, was then invited to give a brief introduction about the University and Law in Japan, along with which he mentioned how their stay in India has been so far, working with a School and NGO in Chennai. He stated how they all were looking forward to the Industrial visits to companies with Indo-Japanese collaboration along with attending various lectures in the upcoming days of their stay in Pune. This was followed by an ice- breaking session with students of Chuo University.

Symbiosis Law School, also welcomed Prof. Rebecca Todd, Senior Counsel Antioch University U.S.A who is visiting as a Scholar In Residence for imparting Mooting skills to the new law entrants.

The formal introduction of the Japanese Delegation was followed by a short cultural programme prepared by the students of SLS, Pune, which started off with the auspicious lighting of the lamp to invoking God’s blessings and followed by a beautiful melange of classical Indian music, dance and contemporary bollywood music and dance. This event concentrated on showcasing the Indian culture in a bubble. The event also had a variety of music and dance from different parts of India enthralling the Japanese students and the audience alike.

The Japanese Students also very enthusiastically performed a few Japanese songs to the delight of the audience. A surprise package came from a Symbiosis Law School student an enthused volunteer who showcased her Japanese singing abilities and touched the hearts of the Japanese Students. 

Last but not the least there was a befitting end to the programme performed by the German delegation from Ostfalia University, Brunswick Germany which has been with the Symbiosis Law School for the past 10 weeks, portraying just how much they have imbibed from the Indian culture and their experience in India. They represented a state each, Maharashtra, Kerala, Kashmir, West Bengal and Rajasthan as their own and donned the traditional costumes of the place.

All in all it was an enriching experience for all concerned.
