DELHI, NCR LAWYERS ON STRIKE 17 Feb 2009, 1243 hrs IST, PTI Text: NEW DELHI: District court lawyers in the capital and surrounding areas on Tuesday went on a strike to protest against the changes in the CrPC giving police discretion to arrest an accused in offences punishable with a jail term upto seven years. The advocates practising in five district courts here had earlier also gone on a strike, demanding scrapping of the amendments calling them as "anti-people and anti-social". They have already given a call for a nationwide strike on Wednesday. No lawyer is appearing before the courts in the National Capital Region while the matters listed were being adjourned by the presiding officers, an office-bearer of the Co-ordination Committee All Bar Association of Delhi, said. The bar leaders feel that the amendment, doing away with the mandatory arrest provisions, would remove fear from the minds of criminals who would misuse the amendment under the garb of personal liberty. As per the proposed amendments, no arrest would be required for cognizable offences such as molestation, dowry harassment and attempt to robbery, prescribing maximum punishment of seven years' jail term, they said. They are also agitating against the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008, which, they feel, would allow foreign lawyers to practice in the country. Click here to comment on this story.
