Meaning of errors apparent on the face of the record

Dear All,

Errors apparent on the face of the records can be challenge in the High Court or the Supreme Court. Now, What is the distinction with the meaning 1. The Court has assumed a jurisdiction which it does not have. 2. Has failed to exercise a jurisdiction which it does have resulting in failure of justice. and 3.Jurisdition though available is being exercised in a manner which tantamounts to overstepping the limits of jurisdiction.
