As long as you use it for self defence alone it is legal

It is legal provided you have a licence to hold a sten gun.

Dr. Vashishta Ji, the author of this thread wants to know about use of stun gun and not sten gun. Stun gun and sten gun are two entirely different things.

Stun gun is not a firearm as described in Arms Act 1959 because it does not fire a projectile. The use of expression "gun" in name stun gun is a misnomer. It is not really a gun. Stun gun is actually a battery powered instrument with two electrodes. When the electrodes are pressed against another person and activated by a button, it discharges a very high voltage current to cause temporary immobilization of muscles by attacking nerves. Those wearing thick insulating clothes or some persons having high electrical body resistance etc. may withstand such shock. Fully agree with the view of Saravanan s ji.

Thank you dear Democratic Indian for correcting me, which I misunderstood to "sten gun" a "firearm".

It is not a crime to use a firearm or even kill a person in self-defence. But the harrasment and expenditure one may have to undergo for the legal defence after the event can be worse than a punishment.

Actually stun gun is a firearm as listed in the Arms Rules 2016. The official term for stun gun is "Electronic Disabling Device" and a licence is needed for this.

Anonymous1, "Electronic Disabling Device" doesn't refer to a stun gun but a tazer. The Arms Act says that an Electronic Disabling Device "means an electronic device capable of firing electrode projectiles propelled by compressed gas, which stays connected to the main unit or device by a conductive wire, and causes temporary neuro-muscular incapacitation of the target.
