What is Vaida and why? Can it be given for no reason?

Today is my case's first trial hearing and in the court they didn't ask anything to my opponent and said a Vaida date that's on Feb 21 of 2018. Can a Vaida be given for such long time (3 months)? Also can a Vaida be given for no reason and if ther is reason what's min and max time limit for a Vaida and how to know the reason behind it? Also how many Vaida can a court can giv to its maximum for a single case? That too this case is regarding 2 woman (my mother & myself ) were beaten up and got wounded by three know men's. Please help me to understand. Thanks.
