Mumbai: The Nagpada police will write to the sessions court on Tuesday to seek custody of a constable and his two accomplices who were granted bail after allegedly s*xually assaulting a 20-year-old trainee constable in a hospital.
The police were surprised after the holiday court at Bhoiwada granted bail to constable Navnath Khedke (31) and Nagpada police hospital staffers,Mahesh Bariya (54) and Shankar Ambavale (42) on Sunday, despite being charged with the newly-amended and non-bailable Criminal Law Act 2013.
While Khedke has been suspended, the hospital is yet to initiate disciplinary action against sweeper Bariya and ward boy Ambavale, who has been working with the hospital for 15 years. The three were arrested on Saturday night after a complaint was lodged with the police. They repeatedly harassed the victim for 15 days, trying all means to get close to her before they committed the offence on January 27, senior inspector N K Mehtar said.
The police said Khedke, who was earlier with the Mumbai Polices motor vehicles department was currently police surgeon Dr S M Patils driver.Patil, however, refuted the investigating officers claim and said that he had no idea what Khedke was doing on the premises as he was transferred to Pune about two months ago.Bariya and Ambavale allegedly aided the crime.
The victim, who joined the force on November 25 last year, was being trained at the Marol police camp in Andheri. She was recuperating in hospital after she fractured her left leg during the course, Mehtar said. She was discharged soon after the incident, though Patil said she was anyway fit to join the training.
Patil said that she was counselled before discharge.Security at the hospital is adequate. There is a constable posted round-the-clock, said Patil.
