Filing new documents at the time of witness chief

Filing new documents at the time of Witness Chief

The trial relates to IPC Section 120B, 467,468,471 etc etc

The witness of the prosecution turned up in the court

The accused is ready to proceed with the Cross Examination after the  Examination in Chief which is to be conducted by the prosecution

Instead of conducting the Examination-In-Chief, the prosecution says orally that it wants to submit more documents

The trial court grants time and adjourns the Examination in Chief.

Is this fair / permitted in a Criminal Trial??

Does permitting new documents not amount to throwing up surprises for the accused??

Please give guidance alongwith case laws applicable
