The main purpose of cross examination is to put your defence in a acceptable position for the judge and to discard the case of the prosecution. There may be situation where asking question beyond  the chief examination  proves fatal to your case. There are three type of question asked in cross-examination (1) question which has comes out from the chief examination (2) question which come to the knowledge out of common knowledge  during the process of cross examination and (3) question which is predetermined before the start of the chief examination. It is upon you how you uses these type of question, when the reply of the question put in the category (1) proves your defence, in that case it is unnecessary to go for further cross examination. It all depends upon the facts and circumstances of each and ever case.
