Clarification on 498a

Good Morning Experts,

I have been reading lot of posts in this forum about 498a and got confused about the law.

Is 498a is for both and dowry and harassment or only for harassment for Dowry?

I mean, can someone file a 498a only for saying mental harassment from husband but no Dowry was involved?

Thanks in advance for the clarifications.

Sec 498a Read as  -----any harassemnt related to dowry or for any conditional/unconditional reasons where the married women can't tolerate it and compells her for suicide or for any harm to heself by mentaly or by physically and the source behind this could be either her husband or his parents or own relatives or All.

Generally, 498a --------> Mental or Physical harassment of married women and she file on any relative of husband

Additionally, Police can add Dp Act 3&4 for dowry harrassment.

Many case laws had widened the ambit of this section. It would be clear to you if you study this site well.

@ Rajesh,

If you read through the section 498a there are two components covered as part (a) and part (b), though in each case the cruelty is bone of contention, it is widely considered on two account (1) cruelty relating  from dowry harassment (2) Any cruelty taht drives a woman to loss of life physically or mentally.
