Cbi raid to arrest indian railways website hackers

Central Bureau of Investigation team has unearthed a syndicate, allegedly involved in making fake reservations on reserved and tatkal quotas by hacking Indian Railways website, and launched a search for its members.

According to official sources, the CBI team has intensified the search for an absconding member of the gang

.

The CBI last evening sealed its travel agency office at Dumariyaganj tehsil, besides seizing several documents from his residence.

The syndicate, active in Mumbai, Delhi and other big cities, used to hack Indian Railways website and do fake bookings on tatkal and reserved quotas in several important trains from the past few years.

Later, they used to sell those tickets to agents.

Last week, the CBI had arrested four members of the gang, following a raid in Mumbai.

the Indian Railways website system is worst in the world.

its so fragile that every change is communicated to hackers from the department itself.

Security of software is not to be done like for security of physical things. The usual habit of maintaining unnecessary "secrecy" by government babus and misconcieved notion of security by obscurity is especially dangerous in software security.

Instead of keeping the source code of the website secret, they should put it up for public scrutiny and put up a sample website for public to hack. Once the source code is scrutinized and public has tried hacking into the sample website, the feedback can be used to plug the security holes in the software. This is one of the ways open source software like linux tested and thus is much more secure and reliable than closed source softwares like "Windows" which is full of security holes. Linux an open source software is used by NASA, department of defense and various security departments of US as well as plenty of other countries around the world.
