CBI raids 14 Customs officers and one Custom House Agent in

CBI in Mumbai CBI conducted a large-scale operation on Tuesday at official and residential premises of 14 Customs officials and a CHA. As per the CBI Release, it was alleged that Customs officials of different ranks from Additional Commissioner to Preventive Officer were collecting illegal gratification from a particular Custom House Agent (CHA). The illegal gratification was in the form of cash, electronic gadgets viz. laptops, mobile phones, air-conditioners etc., air tickets for domestic and international travel as well as travel expenses etc.

The acts on the part of the public servants allegedly established a conspiracy that was hatched between the said public servants and the CHA, who is allegedly a habitual bribe giver. As a part of this conspiracy, the public servants had extended pecuniary advantage to the CHA in various matters after receiving bribe and other considerations.

Searches are still on at the residence and office premises of 14 public servants and also the residence & office premises of the CHA. Incriminating documents and other tangible evidence seized during searches are being scrutinized for further investigation.

An appreciable step in the interest of Public at large. The Govt. sh'd support  CBI giving  free hand to  conduct a large-scale operation keeping watch not only on Custom Officials but also the Excise officers irrespective of the rank and to check their assets. Normally, the officers save their salaray earnings by chosing the PF contribution option in thousands ( from the rank of Gr.D to Gr.A officers). The mode  collecting illegal gratifications may be unltd. like Journey Tickets, gifts, buying electronic items @ nominal discounted price, collecting illegal gratifications for the welfare functions, utilising private company guest houses and hotel accomations  at different places like Shirdi, Tirupati and so on. Besides there is also real need to check the departmental dummy expenses shown to be incurred for getting intelligence, the expenses incurred for Group A officers residential quarter maintenance and so on. The call details in the official records may reveal the links as well as curb the unwanted telephone use from office premises for personal purposes. Most of the officers may  use pre-paid mobile for getting incomming contacts and may use office phone for outdoor contacts. The use of departmental vehicles may be used for visit to tourist places but maintaining the vehicle use showing preventive visits to industrial areas. The officers from the rank of Superintendent and above are always irregular in reporting office duty and moving outside before lunch hours and proceeding to home, home town etc. before duty hours are exhaused. The gratifications for certitying the export documents, issuing the proof of exports etc. and / or for audits protecting the tax evaders and troubling the prompt complying assessees and like was. Really it heartens the mind when some one says abb hamara gratifivcation bhi 6th pay commission ki comparision me  badhna chahiye!
