Angry over repeated scolding maid attacks landlady

JAIPUR: Irked by the daily scolding over her cooking and other chores, a domestic help attacked her landlady with a cricket bat in the wee hours of Friday in the Transport Nagar area.

The victim Ritu, wife of a jeweller, was sleeping when she was attacked. Police said her daughter was also injured in the attack. The domestic help did not flee the spot, and was later arrested by the police.

According to the police, the incident took place in the Barmis Colony around 1.30 am. The accused 20-year-old Kalawati is a resident of Jharkhand.

"She had been working in the house of jeweller Anuj Karnawat for two-and-a-half months. She was hired on the recommendation of a relative. Earlier she used to work near Khandaka Hospital," said Vijay Pal Singh, incharge of Transport Nagar police station.

Anuj was out of town for business. "Kalawati entered the bedroom and started hitting Ritu. In a bid to save her, the daughter also sustained injuries," the officer said.

Following the assault, Ritu called up her brother-in-law Vivek Navalkha, and also informed the police.

"Ritu and her daughter were admitted at the hospital. They were discharged after treatment," Singh said.

"That Kalawati did not try to escape suggests that she had not attacked Ritu with the motive of robbery," Singh said.

During interrogation, Kalawati reportedly told the police that she was angry at Ritu, and the family for regularly scolding her. "Kalawati used to stay in the house. She said Ritu used to complain about her cooking," he said.

The police are verifying her background. "We have come to know about the place where she used to work earlier. A team is being sent to ascertain if she has a criminal background," the officer added.

Like many other cases in the past, the family members had not carried out police verification of Kalawati.
