U have to obtain death certificate from the Registrar of Birth and Deaths, The municpal commissioner is the Registrar of Birth and Deaths. After the death of a person u will have to file an application to enter the date of death to Registrar after 7 days death certificate will be issued.
If the death is more than one year then you will have to file criminal miscelleneous case in the Court.

Get the death certificate from if it is urba area from Municipality, if it is rural area from Gram Panchayat.
Apply to the Mandal Revenue Officer concerned to issue legal heir certificate along with death certificate. The MRO will hold inquiry and issue legal heir certificate.
For succession certificate, please file civil proceeding before Court.

Dear Vijayan, the process and local system slightly varies from state to state also from district to district. For prompt suggestion you should disclose your area, state etc.

i do agree with learned friends....

An application along with the death certificate is to be made before the Revenue Authorities for Legal Heirship certificate. After verification, they will issue the LHC. (If applying within time-limit).

For succession Certificate, one has to approach the civil court having jurisdiction.
