investigations,inquiry,trials

(Querist) 24 August 2008 This query is : Resolved
what is the dfference between the three.

at what time after commiting a crime one starts and another stops.
deepak kumar (Expert) 25 August 2008
when any offense is committed an aggrieved person has two options he either lodges an FIR with the police or files a complaint case before the magistrate. On filing of FIR investigation starts immediately and the police finds out whether the crime has been committed and who committed it.
if complaint case is lodged the magistrate inquires into the matter. for a layman's perspective both are same except it is conducted by two different authorities having different powers.

once investigation/inquiry is concluded the accused persons are called upon by the court to answer the charges against them and then the trial of the case starts culminating in conviction/acquittal of the accused.
