What does Act mean?

What does"(amendment)'Act'" really mean in:
eg: CPC (46 of 1999), (22 of 2002)
Central sale tax Act,1956(74 of 2004)etc.
What meaning do 46,22,74 carry here?

Amendment to CPC or other Acts , is change of procedures and change of Law and it is Amendments to an act/ Statute / Procedural Code !

An Act is a legal document codifying the result of deliberations of a committee or society or legislative body. The number denotes the serial of the Act legalised in that year

Res. Experts,
That I know, amendment to the act is changes bought out according to need of the time.

But What I wanted to ask is Whether CPC(46 of 1999) means 46th amendment of the year 1999? likewise, CPC(22 of 2002)means 22nd amendment of the year 2002?

If so, how come 46th amendment took place earlier than the 22nd amendment?

The Act No;- 46/1999 is the Nubmer of the Act in the year 1999 under which the CPC is amended !

Dear Mr NIBO

Any amendment in a Act is made by enacting a seperate Act. each and every Act enacted by the parliament is given a serial number. As such Act number 46 of 1999 means 46 th Act of 1999 and so on. It may be first amendment or fifth or any other amendment in the principal act.
