Right to convert religion

(Querist) 16 December 2014 This query is : Resolved
PLEASE TELL ME DOES RIGHT TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION INCLUDES RIGHT TO CONVERT RELIGION UNDER OUR INDIAN CONSTITUTION ? OR RIGHT TO CONVERT RELIGION IS VIOLATION OF OUR CONSTITUTION?
ajay sethi (Expert) 16 December 2014
Article 25 does provide freedom of religion, it also went on to state the word propagate religion does not give the right to convert. The word propagate has been used in Article 25(1) of the Indian Constitution, but that does not give the right to convert another person to one's own religion, but to transmit or spread one's religion by an exposition of its tenets.
SC has observed that while propagating religion was allowed, converting does not form part of fundamental rights. What the Article grants is not the right to convert another person to one's own religion, but to transmit or spread one's religion by an exposition of its tenets.

A student's academic query. The question arises, have you really read the relevant article of the Constitution, the language of which is quite clear.

A query though appearing to be an academic in nature, well addressed by expert Mr. Ajay Sethi.
