(Querist) 26 September 2016 This query is : Resolved
Dear Sir,
I am working in government of india, for past 2 years and i got married recently. So, my medical CGHS is also extended to my wife but i would like to know as my wife is the only single child of my father in law & Mother in law and they are dependent on me.Can i extend this facility of medical benefit to them ?

My father in law is a farmer.
Where as my my father is a government servant so they have their very own medical security.

No. Such benefit cannot get extended upto father in law and mother in law.

For CGHS cards, as dependent, what is the meaning of the word “family" ?

The term ‘family’ means and includes:-
“Husband or wife as the case may be and other dependent family members.

Dependent Family Members:

parents, sisters, widowed sisters, widowed daughters, minor brothers and
minor sister, children and step-children wholly dependent upon the Government Servant and are normally residing with the Government Servant”.

Also now include , dependent divorced / separated daughters (including their dependent minor children) and step-mother.

The term dependency means that income from all sources including pensions and pension equivalent of DCRG benefit is less than Rs.3500/-plus amount of DA on Basic pension of Rs. 3500/- per month.

However, there is no such clause as dependency in respect of spouse.

Your parents in law are not covered under CGHS benefits.

In-laws not included.

Some state Govt's have introduce schemes for farmers.

The Parents in law may buy Mediclaim.

If there are some societies of farmers that provide benefits for members, check it.

Banks have tied up with insurers and provide coverage at reduced rated.Check these.

You can proceed for mediclaim as suggested by the expert Kumar Doab.

CGHS do not cover father in law, however, other companies may cover which being a serving or retired employee, may not be suitable for you.
Sudhir Kumar, Advocate (Expert) 11 October 2016
Only female employees have such option
