Criteria for date fixing

In criminal cases, date is fixed by court. But I feel there is no criteria for such fixation of date. The party who please concerned babu, date is fixed according to his convenience even for 3-4 months. Is there is any rule in this regard.

courts are over burdened with heavy backlog of cases . hence it is not possible to get short dates

Due to burden of cases on Courts, to decide old cases on priority and requirement of case may have forced the court for long date.
